A City of Landmarks and Charm

Originally fortified in the 1740's, four different defensive structures have been situated on Citadel Hill. Today, visitors explore a massive star-shaped fortress, formally known as Fort George, which took 28 years to construct before completion in 1856. The fort features an army museum, while its amoured walls afford clear view of the beautiful harbour. The "living history" program portrays life in the fort with soldiers, their wives, and civilian tradesmen re-enacting military life in the 19th century. At Christmastime, Citadel Hill treats visitors to crafts, games, and caroling in a celebration known as "Victorian Christmas".
